CAVE PARK GRABOVAČA
Cave park Grabovača offers their visitors an opportunity to return to the past, thousands of years ago. The underground world of of caves and pits has always attracted humans and Grabovača is the only cave park in Croatia.
In Grabovača one is able to uncover the inappreciable affluence of underground karstic forms, 1/4 of the total number of protected speleological objects in Croatia. It consists of three caves which are on the list of protected national geomorphologic monuments of nature: cave Samograd, Medina and Amidžina cave.
The cave Samograd, which with its magnificent arched ceilings, bridges and balconies leaves one breathless, is open for visiting. Cave is 345m long and consists of four large halls.
On the outer edges of the park flows river Lika. The Lika River is the longest sinking river in Croatia, 78 kilometres long, which makes it the second largest sinking river in Europe.
Walking through the park on almost every step we can find a greater or smaller record of the past.
Except natural, this park abounds with cultural and historical heritage. Old town of Perušić, first time mentioned in 1071. is also in the boundaries of the park. In the last few years, arheological excavations collecetd valuable movable material that shows that the Old town of Perušić fort is one of the rare forts in this area that survived Ottoman occupation. The Old town of Perušić is localy known as “Turkish tower”. Only 50 meters northwest from the Old town is the medieval gothic church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, which uniqueness is that during the rule of the Ottoman empire this catholic church was converted into mosque.
There are many values in the Cave park Grabovača and it is impossible in just few lines to summerize all of it, anyone can easily conclude that this area is remarkable blend of natural resources and human history that deserve care and protection.
Since Grabovača is extremely visited, the park developed numerous and varied facilities for visitors - from educational trails, educational programs, sports fields to large tourist attractions such as cave Samograd, sightseen "Ploče" to the medieval site Old Town Perušić and Gothic church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
