
GRIFFON VULTURES, CRES
Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) is one of the greatest natural assets Tramuntana, the island of Cres, including Croatian.
The Cres two ornithological reserves ("Podokladi" in the middle and "crown" in the northern part of the island) was established precisely because of them, and the whole island has about 80 nesting pairs. Island's population that resides in Cres (the island of Krk, Plavnik and Prvić), is unique because here the vultures nesting on vertical cliffs just above the sea - sometimes less than 10 meters above sea level. Griffon vulture is one of the largest flying birds, with a wingspan of up to 2.80 meters and can weigh up to 15 pounds.
