Elementary school and high school in Varazdin, finished high school in Zagreb. In Vienna, he studied classical philology, and with Franz Miklosic listened Slavic which deferred to the full. Having graduated he returned to Zagreb, where a decade (1860th-70th), professor at the gymnasium. In 1869. elected member of the real Academy and St Petersburg Academy of correspondence.
One of the first prireditelja works for a number of Old Croatian writers.
