
SPECIAL ORNITHOLOGICAL RESERVE JELAS PONDS
Special ornithological reserve Jelas ponds.
Jelas protected ponds in 1995. decision of the Assembly of the County of Brod-Posavina in the category of special ornithological reserve. Reserve covers 125 ha of ponds. Jelas ponds are part of a national ecological network and the proposed entry into the European ecological network Natura 2000 as an important area for birds. Jelas field ponds has been declared internationally important bird area (IBA - Important Bird Areas). Ponds are man-made wetlands. They are breeding, feeding, wintering birds. On Jelas ponds nesting spoonbill, gray heron, tern, terns, river gull, the wild goose. Here we can see a small great white egret, gaka, yellow Heron, Ferruginous Duck. The fields around the pond feeding the cranes and the surrounding forests black stork nests. Ponds are also important habitat for otters.
