THE VELEBIT NATURE PARK
The Velebit Nature Park is the largest protected area in Croatia. It is also one of the most important areas of biodiversity in Europe.
Natural processes, combined with the effects of three different climates (continental, Mediterranean and mountain), which are intertwined in this region, have created different habitats for a large number of endemic species of flora and fauna. UNESCO included the Velebit mountain in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 1978 for its importance for the preservation of biodiversity.
The Velebit Nature Park stretches over an area of 2274 square kilometres in a length of 145 kilometres. Its size and location offer a large number of leisure activities to visitors. Those who opt for an active vacation can try their skills at mountaineering, cycling, sport fishing, rafting and canoeing, alpinism or they can simply hike along educational trails.
We recommend a visit to Zavratnica bay, a protected landscape. Premuzic trail is also an interesting destination. It runs through the most interesting parts of north and central Velebit. This trail is protected as cultural property and it offers breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea.
Sport climbing aficionados can visit the mountaineering zone at Dabarski kukovi.
The karst rivers Zrmanja and Krupa enrich the southern part of the Velebit Nature Park with the beauty of their falls, depth of their canyons and diversity of their flora and fauna.
