At the very limited space there are late antique, medieval, renaissance, baroque and modern elements that still make the social center of Split. It is an example of the interchange of human values, over a specific period of time or within a cultural area of ​​the world, through the development of architecture and city planning. It is a testimony to the cultural tradition and civilization.

Among the best preserved remains of the palace belongs to the circuit ground vaulted hall. This circuit, sometimes called the "basement hall," do substructure emperors apartment, situated in the southern quarter of the Palace. For equalization of soil slope which descends from north to south, are the builders of Diocletian built in the southern quarter of the circuit vaulted hall whose only function was to support the upper floors, on which the emperor's residential complex. Because these functions have ground floor rooms are basically the same schedule as the apartments.

By converting the Palace in Split destroyed most of the residential complex, but its ground floor rooms as a substructure of other perfectly preserved. Going Basements visitor will mostly come across walls and arches of the original ancient materials processed finely carved stone (called opus quadratum), sometimes with carved stone-masons marks. Systematic excavation of cellars which began 1956th year to date was excavated about 85% of the area.
