House of Representatives of the Croatian Parliament passed the Act to designate the Park Nature Park 23rd April 1999. year. An important reason for the designation of Papuk Nature Park is as it preserved the characteristics of living and inanimate nature, typical of central Slavonia. It is indisputable that a large part of the natural and the cultivated area with high esthetical, ecological, educational, cultural, historic, tourist and recreational values​​. Nature Park is primarily scientific, cultural and educational institutions, established to maintain the natural state, preserving the natural characteristics and learning about a wide section of the population with the laws of nature. Because of the diversity and variety of flora and fauna of this area, you need the right protection, which should be the basis primarily of scientific knowledge. Proclamation of the Park Nature Park will be possible to more effective protection of rare and endangered plant and animal species.

Discussion session is part of the European and Global UNESCO Geoparks Network, whose main goals are protection, education and sustainable development. Inside geopark Papuk there are numerous areas that have a higher degree of protection than other parts of the park. Status of specially protected areas have received because of their unusual characteristics that manifest them as unique in the area, region, country or even beyond.
