Today's cathedral, the Basilica of St. Peter, was built in the Gothic-Romanesque style. Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer started to build 1866th he was 52 age and 16 years of episcopal ministry. Interior decoration was entrusted to German painters who lived in Rome, father and son Alexander and Ludwig-Maximilian Seitz. The cathedral has seven altars, and adorned by 43 fresco paintings, 31 sculptures and 32 relief, and the organ with 73 registers, three manuals and 5486 pipes. In the crypt of the cathedral is the tomb of Bishop Strossmayer.
