The city of Split in the early Middle Ages, was defended by walls of Diocletian's palace in which it was located. Expanding the city center caused the need for raising additional medieval fortifications.
Penetration of the Turks into the Balkans and the introduction of new modes of warfare with guns, the Split defensive walls were no longer appropriate for the defense of the guns. During the Kandyan war (1645.-1669.) Between the Republic of Venice and the Ottoman Empire, war operations were fought on the territory of Dalmatia.
