On a surface of 5,353 km2, according to the 2001 census. live 53,677 residents, what is classified as the least populated county of Croatia. It has central geographical position and importance as the connecting area of the Croatia. Location of the County in Croatia is on touch of edges of large Croatian geographic regional entities. Gospic is also the largest city and county seat.
The importance of Lika-Senj County in Croatian territory and outside it is primarily determined by the function of geotraffic intersection between the three leading cities in the country - Zagreb, Rijeka and Split, but also some others, such as Zadar and Karlovac. Lika County is known for its authentic economic potentials contained in agriculture soils, forests and water resources, and valuable tourist areas, areas of national parks and nature parks karst of river's basin. A special place belongs to the Velebit mountain, longest and most prominent Croatian mountain, which separates the area of the County on two fronts: coastal and continental. Brightest example of a compound of stone and water in karst are undoubtedly the Plitvice Lakes, the oldest Croatian national park and nature monument from the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
