REMAINS OF CHURCH AND MONASTERY OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST, RAB
Church of St. John the Evangelist is the only medieval religious buildings Romanesque style with deambulatory (procession around the altar) in the sanctuary with us, which makes it a truly remarkable monument.
Until our days were held entirely reduced its remains after the dilapidation of the late nineteenth century. The church is no longer operational. The original church was built in the fifth century as a basilica with a semicircular apse, whose opening to the main nave is wider than its width, and is thus classified as a specific typological group of such buildings. It was decorated with mosaics, of which fragments are preserved in the apse, the sanctuary and the southern nave, with decorative motifs appropriate for this time. The church was rebuilt several times, changing the history of owners and uses. From the 1273rd the Benedictine monks replaced Conventual Franciscans. Towards the end of the eighteenth century until the abolition of the 1828th Here is the seat of the diocese.
