By the mid-19th century when the whole Pula located in the central hill and underneath, in the area surrounding the city walls, there were two main streets, which are then passed through the center of town. One, now Kandler, led to the Saint. John (Porta San Giovanni) at the north end of town, near a water source (Nimphea) Arena floor. With such a door could move on to Trieste or Rijeka.
