Visitors can see many species of animals from almost every continent – mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes and invertebrates. Additionally, the Zoo participates in many endangered species protection programs, offers its visitors various educational programs, organizes events, and offers everyone information about the animals and nature itself.

Zagreb Zoo was founded by Mijo Esq. Filipovic 27.06.1925. the area of today's first island, the first lake in the park Maksimir. On opening day the only animals that were in the zoo were three foxes and three owls. With the help of citizens and other zoos of animals soon increased, and I garden zoo has expanded to its current area.

1971 zoo-garden had 159 animals and 609 species of birds, and in1989. 129 species and 601 individual. Renovation and modernization began in 1990., and lasts to this day.
