ŠIBENIK - KING KREŠIMIR CITY
City of Sibenik is the oldest Croatian town on the Adriatic. It is mentioned for the first time 1066. in a written document of king Petar Kresimir IV.
Šibenik was founded by Croats more than 1000 years and is therefore the oldest native Croatian town on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. There are multiple interpretations of name origin Sibenik. Juraj Šižgorić in, in a part of the name describes, saying that the city is so named because it is surrounded by birchs. Another interpretation is associated with the forest through the toponym "Sibinicum," which covered a narrower microregion Sibenik. Sibenik was first mentioned in the 1066th year. in a document of King Petar Kresimir IV, who lived in the fortified citadel of St. Michael.
The city has four historic fortresses (Saint Nicholas, Saint Michael, St. John and Šubićevac).
The oldest fort in the center (St. Michael - 9 century) from which you can see the whole city and the islands of the Sibenik archipelago. St.. Michael is the patron of the city of Sibenik. The historical center of Sibenik, with its numerous churches and monasteries, houses and palaces, is talking about the rich cultural heritage. The narrow streets and squares reveal harmony of Gothic and Renaissance forms with details of folk architecture.
Cathedral of St.. Jacob is a prominent monument of Šibenik, built in Gothic-Renaissance style (1431 - 1535) along the main Master George Dalmatian. Cathedral abounds with numerous special features of which we highlight a portrait of 71 human heads. The cathedral is under protection of UNESCO since 2000 to that year.
Sibenik is a political, administrative and cultural center of Sibenik-Knin County.
